About Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program

The Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program (WU Scholars) is a program established to assist young people across the world and their efforts to pursue post-secondary education. The WU Scholars program which was launched in 2017 was birthed as a result of the belief of the  Western Union Foundation that education is a key pathway to success.

The foundation is continuing to provide total support to exceptional less privileged students so that they can gain higher education and have a better chance of supporting themselves, their families, and their communities through a $400,000 fund, that will award a minimum of 40 scholarships of up to $10,000 each to promising young students in their final or penultimate year of their degree program. Students will be selected based on their academic standing, personal goals, and level of financial need.

International students in post-secondary higher education institutions in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States are eligible for this program. Schools in any of these countries are invited to nominate up to five of their international students to be selected for the program.

The program is though sponsored by Western Union Foundation but it is being administered by the Institute of International Education.

Benefits of Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program

40 beneficiaries will be awarded $10,000 each which will cover tuition and fees, books, health insurance, housing, and other living expenses for the academic year.

Eligibility Requirements for Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program

To be qualified to be selected for the  Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program, here are the criteria which must be met:

  • You must be an international student studying in any of these countries US, UK, Europe, Singapore, Japan, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.
  • You must be in your final or penultimate year of a full-time undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree.
  • You must be studying in accredited colleges or universities
  • You must be able to demonstrate financial need.
  • You must exceptional student in your academics and have high ambitions.
  • You must be pursuing a degree in one of the following categories: science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business/entrepreneurship.
  • You must demonstrate great leadership skills and community awareness

How To Apply for Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program

The application for the scholarship is online and candidates will be selected based on criteria relating to the program’s three pillars: Perseverance, Aspiration, and Community.

Accredited post-secondary higher education institutions in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States are to nominate up to five of their international students for whom help is needed the most.

The school which is nominating several students should rank students based on financial need, with “1” being the highest and “5” being the lowest level of need and they are to take time to describe each student’s financial and personal situation individually.
